HK AUDIO – Made in Germany or Engineered in Germany?

Made in Germany – that statement has said so much about who we are and what we do for nearly 40 years now. The ideas, the designs, the R&D, the manufacturing and, not least of all, the rigorous quality control – it all springs from the same source. All our products live up to the same high standards we live by out there every day in every department. As we see it, this is what it takes to treat the user to a deeply satisfying experience with our speaker systems – and to continue doing so for many tomorrows to come.

Most HK AUDIO products to date have been labelled “Made in Germany.” Lately, though, we have been rolling out speaker systems labelled “Engineered in Germany.” So, why do we distinguish between these two designations of origin? The following background story goes to answer our customers’ questions about these labels.

Made in Germany

We apply the “Made in Germany” label to products we develop in-house and whose housings we manufacture in our main plant at St. Wendel, Germany. We source parts and materials such as wood, paint, electronic components and loudspeakers from vendors inside and outside the EU. Final assembly and quality control takes place in our German factory. According to customs regulations, most of the added value is created in Germany.

Engineered in Germany

We apply the “Engineered in Germany” label to products we either develop in St. Wendel, Germany, or for which we use component assemblies developed by partner companies to our specifications. Our R&D department does the final tuning. Final assembly and quality control is handled to our specifications by our offshore partners, mainly in Asia. Parts and materials such as wood, paint, plastic parts, electronic components and loudspeakers are sourced from various international vendors. According to customs regulations, most of the added value is not created in Germany.
